Wattpad Cliches

Wattpad is a site where writers and readers of different ages and backgrounds come together to share their stories. Wattpad has blown up over the years, increasing in users from newbies to professional writers. I joined Wattpad in 2011 and since then, have noticed several cliches.

Hard-headed main female character

For some reason, there are a lot of books where the main female character is an idiot. I get that this makes for conflict in the book, but characters still have to make some sense. Writers throw their main characters into dumb situations that could have been avoided if they had some common sense.

  • Example: The main character is human with an alpha mate. She’s human meaning if she went up against a normal werewolf, she would lose quickly. Something happens where there’s a war between two packs. Instead of staying inside like her alpha mate tells her to, she goes out into the battle with a supposed “need” to help. She goes out and ends up becoming a hostage.

A person in their right mind would have stayed put, not throw themselves into unnecessary danger. Characters like these drive me crazy. If a writer creates a character with certain limitations, then they need to stay true to those limitations throughout the whole story.

Possessive Alpha Male

Jealousy is one thing, but being overly possessive is another. I can’t deal with these characters. Why are all alpha males so clingy? Not even puppies are this stingy with their owners. If you even look at another guy, they would drag you away and lock you into a tower. Come on, really? Alpha males seriously need to get over their insecurities.

Mate rejection

These books used to be very common. Two mates would share one glance and instantly know that they’re mates. While the female is ecstatic, the male is angry. The male finds something wrong with the female from one single glance and then decide to reject the female. The female then goes through a painful rejection and her loud best friend, even though knowing she’s going through a painful rejection, will force her to go out and meet someone else. This can end in two ways: the female meets another alpha whose mate died and they end up together, or the female’s mate gets jealous and wants her back. The female takes him back even though her mate was a butthole the entire novel.

Rejection stories can be done very well, but most of them are too cliche for me.¬†Jealousy is one thing, but being overly possessive is another. I can’t deal with these characters. AAAAAAAAH!

Why do some people think it’s necessary to write words with multiples of the same letter?

  • Example: “Waaaaaaake uuuuuuup, Annaaaaaaa!” she screamed.

I find several examples of these in stories on Wattpad. As soon as I see one, I close out of the story and remove it from my library because that’s unnecessary. This is not a text message. This is a book that people have to read. If someone does this every other line, it gets annoying.

He’s a guy; she’s a girl

She’s sweet.

He’s mean.

She’s short.

He’s tall.

She loves chocolate.

He hates peas.

Can we please stop with descriptions like these? I feel a little piece of me die everything I read one of these. We’re writing descriptions to books, not a movie trailer. Yes, they’re different. I get it, but this tells me nothing about what the story is actually about. Please just give me sweet paragraphs.

Unwanted Sex scenes

A lot of stories on wattpad have sex scenes (even though they aren’t marked as mature like they’re supposed to be.) I honestly don’t care for all the smut, especially since some of them were written by thirteen-year-olds who don’t know the first thing about sex.

I can handle tasteful sex scenes that are sprinkled within a novel. There is no reason for a book to have a sex scene in every chapter. Do these characters know how to do anything else?

Don’t they have jobs? Don’t they have bills to pay? Can we please stop with descriptions like these?
